When I said “YES” to marrying Mike, I was overcome with joy but lacked the knowhow to plan our wedding. Pricing a few venues and vendors nearly sent me into a state of panic! The costs were much more than anticipated. I began to relegate myself to the idea that we’d either be swimming in an ocean of debt or having the reception McDonalds.
But then a message of hope appeared on the horizon (actually it was in my mailbox). As it so happened, a friend sent me The Wedding Book by Mindy Weiss.
My fiancé and I started reading and planning out things stepwise, from the beginning.
STEP ONE: set a realistic budget, and then give yourself a 10% cushion.
A usual cost breakdown is this:
⁃Site, Food, and Drinks 42%
⁃Wedding Rings 8%
⁃Rehearsal Dinner 6%
⁃Bridal Gown 5%
⁃Reception Music 4%
⁃Groom’s Attire 3%
⁃Hair and Makeup 2%
⁃Ceremony Music 2%
Working through the numbers helped to ground my expectations and provide a sense of relief in knowing what we should expect to outlay.
