3 Things I Learned from Taylor Swift Instagram

Behind her girl next door appearance Taylor Swift is savvy entrepeneur. Just look at her 98 million followers on Instagram. I decided to check out her Instagram for myself to see what strategies are working for her. Here is what I found:

  • Create a personal campaign.

On a blank sheet of paper, Taylor scribbled a single-line verse from one of her new songs. Over each of the next 13 days, she added a line. With each day, her fans' expectations grew in anticipation of her new album release. Taylor's handwritten lyrics added a personal touch and simultaneously created a certain exclusivity among her followers.

  • Take care of your personal brand.

Taylor has created and continues working to uphold her image as the good girl next door. Her sterling reputation has garnered the affection of millions of fans around the globe and cemented the public trust. In accounting, this idea is called "goodwill," and it is an intangible asset that adds value to a business' bottom line. Let's face it, you don't get to where Taylor is without having some business savvy. This is why we can be certain not to find Taylor supporting a risky cause or promoting a risque product line, such as erotic toys, which would tarnish her reputation or convey a social stigma. Instead Taylor collaborates with like-minded brands that jive with her personality, embrace her credo, and support her positive public image.

  • "Tell me who you're with and I'll tell you who you are."

A approving nod by Selena Gomez–who happens to be among Taylor's best friends–never hurt anyone's popularity. Now, I’m not saying to ditch all of your non-influential friends for the popular crowd, but if you want to establish an active presence on social networks, you cannot be afraid to collaborate with those who have influence. Team with your blogger friends to create interesting content together. And if you don’t have friends with a following, write to a fellow artisan, someone posting or promoting content that is similar to yours, and make a proposal.
